(UG) If we were to compare all the Chianti Classico wines tasted to a concert, for most Chianti Classico wines, the 2024 vintage would be the string section—vibrant, acidic, immediate—but the Gran Selezione would undoubtedly remain the virtuoso soloist. This year more than ever, the pinnacle of the Gallo Nero pyramid has demonstrated that a golden label isn’t enough to create elegance: the terroir is needed, of course, but above all, it requires a “polished” tannin that knows when to stay in its place and also knows how to meet the tastes of contemporary consumers, without ever denying its identity.

Here is our definitive selection of the 20 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wines, from which a specific geography emerges among the various UGA (Additional Geographic Units) that capture the Gallo Nero territory: the mountain freshness of Gaiole and the mineral flavor of San Casciano.

The Top 20 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione: Excellence in Simple Words

The masters of balance

  • Maurizio Alongi – Vigna Barbischio 2023 (Gaiole): Pomegranate, blood orange, currant, and cardamom create an intense, lively, fresh, and structured palate, with precise, fine tannins. Simply elegant.
  • Tenuta di Arceno – Strada al Sasso 2023 (Castelnuovo Berardenga): Notes of flowers and fresh fruit, with sweet spices in the background. On the palate, it is intense and tannic, yet elegant. Balanced and easy to drink.
  • Castello di Gabbiano – Cerbaiola 2022 (San Casciano): Glazed and iodine notes, balsamic notes, and black pepper. Fresh, savory, full-bodied, and long-lasting. Evolving, very elegant.
  • Villa Vallacchio – Cristiana 2019 (San Casciano): A warm, reassuring caress, between dark chocolate and tobacco. The red fruit resurfaces on the palate, driven by vibrant acidity and fine tannins. Elegant and powerful.

The strength of tradition

  • Borgo Casa al Vento – V’Incanto 2020 (Gaiole): Notes of spice and dark fruit. A savory and well-balanced flavor, where smoothness and balance create a harmony that satisfies the palate.
  • Cigliano di Sopra – Gran Selezione 2023 (San Casciano): Notes of violet and fresh raspberry. On the palate, it is taut and savory, with a distinct minerality. Vertical and deep.
  • Castello della Paneretta – Torre a Destra 2017 (S. Donato in Poggio): Dried fruit and licorice in a sip that is at the pinnacle of evolution. Pleasant, wholesome, and balanced.
  • Vignamaggio – Monna Lisa 2018 (Greve): Ripe red fruit, sweet spices and balsamic notes that open up into an intense sip and fine tannins for a fresh and consistent finish.

Tension and structure

  • Castagnoli – Climb 2021 (Castellina): A youthful nose of dark fruit and a light balsamic note. Full-bodied, progressive, lively, and long on the palate. A wine that never stands still.
  • Castello di Meleto – Gran Selezione 2022 (Gaiole): Flowers, red fruit, and a hint of balsamic. A balanced and refined palate with elegant tannins. A modern wine with great potential.
  • Castello di Monsanto – Vigna Il Poggio 2022 (S. Donato in Poggio): A complex nose of blood orange and blood notes. The palate is upright, with a steely backbone and tannins that aim for elegance, though it still has a long way to go.
  • Ricasoli – Colledilà 2023 (Gaiole): Mineral and black pepper notes. Intense, fresh, almost spicy on the finish. Solid structure with precise, linear tannins.

The character of the territory

  • Castello Vicchiomaggio – La Prima 2022 (Greve): Spicy and balsamic. Full-bodied, muscular, taut, and very textured on the palate. Lively yet noble tannins.
  • Tolaini – Vigna Montebello Sette 2022 (Castelnuovo Berardenga): Red fruit, leather, and a hint of vanilla. Lively and intense on the palate, with well-crafted tannins. A truly convincing “classic style.”
  • Bindi Sergardi – Mocenni 89 2020 (Vagliagli): A vegetal and aromatic nose. Pleasant, balanced palate, almost sweet on the finish. Elegant and fresh. A fine confirmation.
  • Castello di Ama – San Lorenzo 2022 (Gaiole): Balsamic and dark fruit. Mineral on the palate, with lively and noble tannins. Impetuous and elegant at the same time.

Subtlety and perspective

  1. Cecchi Family – Family Value 2022 (Castellina): Spicy and almost aromatic. On the palate, it expresses savory and softness, with a consistent finish of fresh red cherry.
  2. Tenuta di Nozzole – Giovanni Folonari 2021 (Greve): Delicate aromas of flowers and red fruits. On the palate, it’s refined, with expertly crafted tannins.
  3. Castello di Bossi – Gran Selezione 2022 (Castelnuovo Berardenga): Subtle and restrained on the nose. Lively, flavorful, and balanced on the palate. A modern elegance.
  4. Il Molino di Grace – Il Margone 2023 (Panzano): Dark notes of blueberry and sweet tobacco. Progressive and fresh on the palate, with a minty finish that cleanses the palate. Rich and deep.

Final Considerations

While the UGA Gaiole remains at the top for complexity and longevity, the San Casciano interpretations offer the most surprising peaks of elegance, thanks to a management of tannins that this year seemed almost tailor-made. The Gran Selezione 2023, in particular, seems to have found that “squaring the circle” between freshness and structure that was often lacking in drier vintages of the past.

A word of advice to readers : don’t rush. Many of these wines are still “young and edgy,” but they have the makings of great champions. Time will tell.
