From the land known as the birthplace of Nero d’Avola comes Cerasuolo di Vittoria by Planeta.
Planeta is a winery that, over the past 25 years, has dedicated itself to spreading the fame of Sicilian wines worldwide. Production is spread over five different territories of the largest island in the Mediterranean, under the careful oversight of Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta: their forward-thinking, yet at the same time careful activity has allowed them to “churn” extremely high-quality wines out of all their cellars.

Today I will tell you about a bottle that struck me most of all for its clean aroma and pleasant drinkability.

Its name is Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico Dorilli vintage 2014. Dorilli is a location in South-eastern Sicily, near the town of Acate (Ragusa province). in the heart of the birthplace of Nero d’Avola; still, the contribution of Frappato, territorial grape par excellence, is nevertheless instrumental in the wine’s composition. The classic DOCG “blend” actually consists of 70% Nero d’Avola and 30% Frappato grapes. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is the unique DOCG wine tipology in Sicily

The vines grow on red sands under which, at about one meter deep, lies a layer of tuff.

20170115_134616The Dorilli presents a ruby red hue with a violet edge. Perfumes are a mix of black cherry, violet flowers, spices such as pink pepper, juniper, cardamom and finish of cinnamon shades and a sprinkling of vanilla. Overall, the hues are soft and distinct. There’s a perfect correspondence between the flavor and the taste: the wine is soft, intense, clean, with smooth tannins and a good concentration of fruit with its own distinct taste. Each sip of this wine calls for another. A real treat for the palate.

Some technical details: the winemaking process consists of the wine being macerated on its lees for 21 days at 25 ° C; then, after being racked, it undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks; it’s then aged for 12 months in 36 hectolitres oak barrels.

DOCG: wine with denomination of controlled and guaranteed origin

Retail price: € 15 – $ 16; My rating: 92/100

ByUmberto Gambino

Professional journalist and sommelier, from an early age I breathed the scents of the vineyard and tasted the wine in my grandfather's cellar, in Sicily. The multiple life and work experiences brought me first to Liguria, then to the capital. Roman by adoption, but always Sicilian at heart, I am always fascinated by the beauties of our Italy, between territories to explore and typical food and wine.
