It&#8217;s the country&#8217;s most famous export, produced primarily in the Marlborough region and shipped worldwide in large quantities, sometimes even in bulk for supermarkets that bottle it under their own labels. But this limited association obscures the true story. New Zealand is a small country with an extraordinary variety of climates, soils, and regional identities, and its most interesting wines are often those that Italian consumers rarely have the opportunity to taste.   <\/p>\n<p>Like Italy, New Zealand is a place where geography shapes its character: coastal breezes, volcanic hills, river gravels, alpine valleys. Each region has its own voice, and each grape variety expresses something different depending on where it&#8217;s grown. Understanding New Zealand only through Sauvignon Blanc is like understanding Italy only through Pinot Grigio.  <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18526\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18526\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-18526 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/winereporter.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Me-and-my-cellar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winereporter.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Me-and-my-cellar.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/winereporter.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Me-and-my-cellar-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/winereporter.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Me-and-my-cellar-1024x764.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/winereporter.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Me-and-my-cellar-768x573.jpg 768w, https:\/\/winereporter.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Me-and-my-cellar-1536x1145.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Penney and his cellar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So I want to offer our Italian friends a broader picture by highlighting <strong>four grape varieties in eight regions,<\/strong> each showcasing a different facet of New Zealand&#8217;s wine culture. From the flavorful Pinot Noirs of Martinborough to the elegant Syrahs of Hawke&#8217;s Bay, from the refined Chardonnays of Auckland to the aromatic Rieslings of Waipara, New Zealand is far more diverse and interesting than its reputation suggests. <\/p>\n<p>British wine critic and Master of Wine Jancis Robinson describes <strong>New Zealand Chardonnay<\/strong> as our &#8220;best-kept secret&#8221; and our &#8220;most exciting&#8221; white wine. Chardonnay is produced throughout the country, typically balancing vibrant acidity with precise citrus and stone fruit, supported by a mineral texture and subtle oak. <strong>Villa Maria<\/strong> offers a wide range of Riserva labels: for a ripe, tropical, and creamy expression, the <strong>McDiarmid Hill Gisborne Chardonnay<\/strong> is recommended. Other popular wines available in Italy include the intensely mineral <strong>, &#8220;Burgundy-killing&#8221; Kumeu River Mate&#8217;s<\/strong> from northwest <strong>Auckland<\/strong> , and the dense <strong>Neudorf Moutere<\/strong> from the clay soils of <strong>Nelson<\/strong> .  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Pinot Noir<\/strong> is New Zealand&#8217;s signature red grape, offering bright, concentrated fruit and elegant structure. Most production is concentrated in the <strong>Central Otago<\/strong> region, where a high-altitude continental climate and intense UV sunlight produce a powerful, fruit-forward Pinot Noir. <strong>Felton Road<\/strong> tames this natural exuberance with delicacy and restraint, producing iconic wines with savory, ethereal elegance: think of the powerful structure of Block 5 or the fragrant, herbaceous freshness of Block 3. Meanwhile, in the windy, maritime climate of <strong>Martinborough<\/strong> , <strong>Ata Rangi<\/strong> creates a deeply savory, structured Pinot Noir of complex intensity that ages gracefully for decades.  <\/p>\n<p>New Zealand <strong>Syrah<\/strong> , produced in a cool climate with a savory, linear style, contrasts sharply with robust Australian Shiraz and is often compared to C\u00f4te R\u00f4tie and Hermitage. The two most renowned regions for quality Syrah are <strong>Hawke&#8217;s Bay<\/strong> and <strong>Auckland<\/strong> <strong>&#8216;s Waiheke Island<\/strong> . <strong>Te Mata Bullnose<\/strong> is a floral, peppery, yet silky Northern Rhone-style Syrah, available in fine wine shops in Rome and Milan. Also not to be missed is <strong>Craggy Range<\/strong> , especially the flagship <strong>Le Sol.<\/strong> From <strong>Waiheke<\/strong> Island, <strong>Man O&#8217; War<\/strong> &#8216;s <strong>Dreadnought Syrah<\/strong> offers a complex coastal expression, with layers of olive p\u00e2t\u00e9 and spice on notes of blackberry and plum.  <\/p>\n<p>The savvy collector shouldn&#8217;t overlook New Zealand <strong>Riesling<\/strong> . Described by renowned Master of Wine Bob Campbell as &#8220;criminally underrated and underpriced,&#8221; New Zealand Riesling combines the pristine purity of New World fruit with the electrifying natural acidity of great German examples. Excellent Rieslings can be found in many regions, but two producers stand out. <strong>Pegasus Bay<\/strong> in <strong>Waipara<\/strong> produces four distinct styles, from the dry <strong>Bel Canto<\/strong> to the exquisitely balanced <strong>Pegasus Bay Riesling<\/strong> , via the late-harvest <strong>Aria<\/strong> and the sumptuous <strong>botrytized Encore<\/strong> . Meanwhile, in the heart of <strong>Marlborough, Framingham<\/strong> offers a wide range of Rieslings. The <strong>Classic Riesling<\/strong> is a lightly sweet style with aromas of mandarin, wet stone, and beeswax, and flavors of citrus and apricot over a juicy, textured finish. For Italian drinkers who appreciate authenticity, terroir, and craftsmanship, these four varietals\u2014Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Riesling\u2014offer an ideal introduction to the country&#8217;s broader potential. Beyond these, New Zealand produces exceptional examples of many other varieties, <strong>from Albari\u00f1o to Gr\u00fcner Veltliner and Cabernet Franc<\/strong> .
