This year, the tastings delivered a clear verdict: Etna&#8217;s reds are alive, vigorous, and increasingly capable of competing with the world&#8217;s great wines. And Europe&#8217;s highest active volcano has had its say with a high concentration of quality that leaves no room for interpretation.<\/p>\n<h2>Our 10 Etna red wines to taste and recommended pairings<\/h2>\n<p>If there&#8217;s one lesson this round of tastings delivers, it&#8217;s that Etna is no longer a promise: it&#8217;s a certainty. The Nerello Mascalese here expresses nuances that no other terroir in the world can imitate. Smoke, medicinal herbs, lively tannins that refine with age, a ferrous minerality reminiscent of cooled lava: Etna speaks its own language, and this year it did so better than ever. All the wines tasted speak of a Nerello Mascalese that has nothing left to prove.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Benanti \u2013 Etna Rosso DOC Rovittello Particle 349 Centenary Bush 2019<\/strong><br \/>\nA label that comes as no surprise to those familiar with the winery, one of those that revolutionized winemaking on the volcano. This Rovittello from a century-old bush vine is a refined olfactory architecture: aromatic herbs, balsamic notes, red rose, and berries unfold with order and generosity. On the palate, it is elegant and evolved, spiced with restraint, harmonious throughout. The long finish, revealing its potential, places it among the island&#8217;s most significant reds. <em>Pair with<\/em> <em>aged Sicilian cheeses like Piacentino Ennese.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Palmento Costanzo \u2013 Etna Rosso DOC Nero di Sei 2022<\/strong><br \/>\nSweet notes of still-fresh red fruit, a floral aroma that invites you to sip. The tannins are soft on the palate, the freshness is well-balanced, and the finish is impressive. A wine that finds its balance in immediate pleasure without sacrificing complexity. <em>Pairing: pasta with pork rag\u00f9. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cusumano \u2013 Alta Mora Etna Rosso DOC Guardiola 2021<\/strong><br \/>\nDelicate yet unmistakably Etna. Concentrated and harmonious, it is one of three Russo wines tasted that confirm the extraordinary consistency of this winery. <em>Ideal with roast lamb with potatoes and rosemary. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Girolamo Russo \u2013 Etna Rosso DOC Feudo di Mezzo 2024<\/strong><br \/>\nFresh red fruit, spices, and flowers: a more youthful and vibrant bouquet. The palate is composed and compact, with a pleasant freshness. The tannins are unobtrusive. Tobacco, leather, dark chocolate, blackberry jam, balsamic: a rich and complex bouquet, all projected towards evolution. An Etna that looks to the future with optimism. <em> Pasta alla Norma is the death of it. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Graci \u2013 Etna Rosso DOC Arcuria Sopra il Pozzo 2021<\/strong><br \/>\nA sophisticated balsamic bouquet, sweet, smoky tobacco, hydrocarbon, and ferrous notes: a nose that speaks volumes. The intensity on the palate is remarkable, with lively tannins and a refreshing freshness. A few rough edges don&#8217;t detract from a wine that clearly expresses its Etnean soul. <em>Paired with long-aged Majorcan cheese.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Final consideration<br \/>\n<\/strong> Ten labels that all tell the same story with different accents: Etna has become one of the world&#8217;s great wine terroirs.
