{"id":15051,"date":"2016-11-08T17:46:39","date_gmt":"2016-11-08T16:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thewinereporter.it\/?p=15051"},"modified":"2025-02-26T12:36:39","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T11:36:39","slug":"face-to-face-with-piedirosso-another-red-grape-from-campania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/winereporter.it\/en\/face-to-face-with-piedirosso-another-red-grape-from-campania\/","title":{"rendered":"Face to face with Piedirosso, another red grape from Campania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a particular kind of red grape called <strong>Piedirosso<\/strong> considered a small metter or, more precisely, it was useless by the native varieties of <strong>Campania<\/strong>, until few years ago.<br \/>\nThe wine made by this grape was almost exclusively used as a blending wine because it isn\u2019t much tannic, so it was more difficult realize softer and less aggressive full-bodied and structured wines such as<strong> Aglianico<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If <strong>Piedirosso<\/strong> grows without careful it will not be a very productive grape and it will request a lot of attention to the vineyard process and to the winery. However, Piedirosso is very resistant to grape\u2019s diseases such as powdery mildew (oidium). According with its strong and ancient variety, we can find it in <strong>Campi Flegrei area<\/strong> and also on the <strong>Vesuvius volcano.<\/strong> This is possible thanks to sandy and loose soils of these area. We can also find a variety <strong>before phylloxera<\/strong>, grown ungrafted.<\/p>\n<p>Piedirosso is usually harvested during the first 15 days of October.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-15041\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winereporter.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/piedirosso_ok-e1478599103170-291x300.jpg\" alt=\"piedirosso_ok\" width=\"221\" height=\"228\" \/>Until few years ago, some winegrowers are taking care to Piedirosso using an easier way to cultivate it. Piedirosso become a modern, fresh, thin wine with a good drinkability. The color is a little red and the smell is characterized by geranium, red flowers and red fruit aromas. It isn\u2019t too much alcoholic. The result is a fresh wine with silky and kind tannins, just perfect to be matched with sea dishes.<\/p>\n<p>Piedirosso became a good alternative to the traditional red \u201cAglianico-based\u201d made in Campania. It \u2018a red lighter wine who is perfect to drink with light meal.\u00a0Someone compared it even to <strong>Pinot Noir<\/strong>, but it\u2019s a strange claim because the French wines are usually more elegant (except some certain cases) than Piedirosso wines.<\/p>\n<p>Piedirosso is cultivated also in <strong>Sannio and Irpinia<\/strong> area, often straight vinified.<\/p>\n<p>The curious grape name is due to stalk of the berry is shaped like a pigeon\u2019s leg: called as <em>\u201cPer \u2018e palummo\u201d<\/em> in local language.<\/p>\n<p>Now I can say: \u201cPiedirosso, the ugly duckling can become swan\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I tasted some excellent wines from Piedirosso straight from wineries La Sibilla, Astroni, Agnanum, Contrada Salandra.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I learned these concrete and fundamental news about Piedirosso during the event<strong> \u201cCampania Stories\u201d<\/strong> annually dedicated to the excellence of Campania wines.<\/p>\n<p>(photocredits: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montegrillo.it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.montegrillo.it<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>[gmap-embed id=&#8221;15044&#8243;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a particular kind of red grape called Piedirosso considered a small metter or, more precisely, it was useless by the native varieties of Campania, until few years ago.
